William Apps and Philadelphia Apps (nee Foots) departed Gravesend, Kent, England on the 18th of June, 1839 aboard the Florist. Also on board was Philadelphia's sister Elizabeth Selmes (nee Foots) and her husband Thomas Selmes. Horace their third son did not make the journey to Australia and was buried before the ship sailed.

The Florist, a bark of 443 (450 tonne) left Gravesend, Kent, England and sailed to Plymouth. The Florist departed

Plymouth on the 29 June 1839 for it voyage to Australia. Aboard the Florist were 208 migrants.

J Hapton, Surgeon Superintendent reported on the voyage: Passengers on Board 84 adult males, 61 adult females,

23 male and 37 female children. 2 males and 2 females were born on the voyage.

After 119 days the Florist arrived in Sydney, Australia on 26 October, 1839.

 

On arrival William and Philadelphia plus their two children William and Rueben  who had been bought out by the government as free settlers quickly made

their way to Jackson’s Farm, Campbelltown where William was to be engaged by George Payne for 20 pounds plus rations.

On arrival William Apps gave his age as 26. Occupation as farm labourer, his religion as Church of England, his native place

Brede, Sussex and his father William. It was noted that William could read and write.

Philadelphia Apps  gave her age as 26, occupation farm servant, religion as Church of England, her native place as Catshill,

Sussex and her father as Thomas Footes (or Jostes- writing not clear), a powder maker, of Catshill, Sussex.

Living and working near Campbelltown, NSW William and Philadelphia had a further 8 children.

 

Elizabeth Selmes details where recorded and transcribed as mother Mary Bright (Dec'd) and father Thomas Fos.

Elizabeth Foots and Thomas Selmes where married in Catsfield, Sussex, England on 24 May 1839.

Elizabeth Foots and Philadelphia Foots parents where Thomas Foots and Mary Britt married 23rd Feb 1807 in Battle, Sussex, England.

Witness at William Apps and Philadelphia Foots where Samuel Barnes and Chery Foots. The marriage by Banns was conducted in the Westfield by Peter B Wynch Curiate of Westfield.

Mary Britt was baptised Mary Brett on the 10 Oct 1787 in St Mary's , Battle, Sussex, England. and died in Sedlescombe, Sussex, England on the 8th Febuary 1829.

Also aboard the Florist was Philadelphia Foots uncle Edward Britt and two of his children.

Edward Britt was baptised in St Mary's, Battle, Sussex, England on the 5 October 1792. His parents where Edward Brett and Jane Veness. The two daughters who accompanied the family were Ann Veness (nee Britt) baptised 6 Sep 1817 St Mary's, Battle, Sussex, England and Jane Britt baptised 4 June 1824 St Mary's, Battle, Sussex, England .

South Wales, Australia, daughter of Thomas Foots [4124] and Mary Britt [3410]. He married 2nd Sarah Ann Butcher

[3007] 5 April, 1881 in Goulburn, New South Wales, Australia. He was born 5 July, 1833 in Brede, Sussex, England and died 29

January, 1889 in Parkesbourne, New South Wales, Australia, son of Charles Butcher [2562] and Elizabeth Chapman [1129].

Mary Foots the first wife and cousin of Reuben Apps was the daughter of William Foots. Mary Foots was born in Ireland as stated on her immigration record to Australia , 1841 Cencus of Durham and 1851 Cencus Durham. Mary migrated to Australia aboard the "Daphane" which arrived on the 16 January 1859. Occumpaning Mary was her younger brother Mark Foots and her aunty Margeret Foots (Nee Emmerson)

William Foots [2578]was born In Catsfield, Sussex, England and born 27 December 1808 and was baptised the 29 January 1809 in St Lawrence, Catsfield, Sussex, England. William Foots arrived in Australia aboard the "Lusitiana" June 1880 and died on his sons property in Young on the 1 December 1881.
